Spring Beit Midrash 2025

Spring Beit Midrash - A Whole New Shabbat: Three Feasts for the Senses

Thursdays, April 24 and May 1
Tuesday, May 6
7:00-8:30pm

As part of our TRS Discover Shabbat! initiative, Spring Beit Midrash will engage your senses and stimulate your thinking about Shabbat. Reception to follow.

April 24:  Where are we Heading in contemporary prayer?
Rabbi Ariel Tovlev—poet, trans advocate, experiential educator, and a TRS favorite—will explore modern interpretations and new directions in our Shabbat prayers. He will introduce the concept of prayer as poetry and guide us in creating meaningful personal prayers to reflect our spiritual needs.

May 1:  How does Music serve to interpret prayer?
Our own Cantor Michael Shochet will lead this performance and teaching session in exploring musical interpretations of our Shabbat prayers—both contemporary and traditional musical settings. Linking the past to the present to our as-yet “undiscovered” future, Cantor Shochet will demonstrate how sacred music—evolving over time— continues to open the gates of prayer and meaning.

May 6: How do we Look at Shabbat?
Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel's groundbreaking book "The Sabbath" brought so many Jews into a deeper understanding of the spirituality of Shabbat. In this first program, Dr. Ori Soltes (Georgetown University teacher of theology, philosophy, and political/art history) will provide an illustrated presentation taking us from Heschel’s transformative concept of “holiness in time” to visual artists he inspired in following generations, including artist Susan Schwalb.
