Parshat Toldot: Facing This Season in Moments of Challenge

Cantor Sydney Michaeli

This week, Jews around the world will read the Torah portion Toldot, which means “generations.” Among other things, this portion uncovers many challenging family dynamics. We read the stories of Rebecca and Isaac, and Jacob and Esau. There is lying and trickery, and a moment where Jacob steals the birthright and most precious blessing from his brother, Esau, by tricking his father.

These somewhat messy family dynamics may resonate with some at this time of year. As we come to the secular holiday of Thanksgiving, we may be finding excitement and joy in gathering with family and friends, spanning various generations. This can also be a difficult time for many- holiday times and meals can often bring up complex emotions in relationships, especially in this challenging year where things have been so divisive and intense in our world.

No matter how you plan to celebrate Thanksgiving this year, I hope you will each find peace and comfort amongst likeminded folks, and also be able to manage challenging conversations and moments with friends and family who think differently than you do- whether it’s about domestic politics, global issues, or other things. Though being in these relationships can sometimes feel impossible, we do find hope in the stories of the Torah. In just a few weeks, Jacob and Esau, despite their conflict in Parshat Toldot, come back together in peace. They embrace, resolve their differences, and are able to move forward with their relationship and their own lives. Perhaps this model of reconnection and reconciliation can give us some inspiration and comfort in the face of trying times.

I hope the coming Shabbat and secular holiday weekend is full of moments for gratitude. May we all be blessed with understanding, compassion, and hope in this season. Shabbat Shalom.
